  1. An abbey is a building or group of buildings
  2. housing a community of monks or nuns, all 
  3. dedicated to a life of celibacy and religious
  4. seclusion, governed by an abbot or abbess 
  5. respectively. The word is also applied to a
  6. building that was once the church of an 
  7. abbey, for example, Westminster Abbey in
  8. London. In England many abbeys were closed by
  9. Henry VIII, who turned from the Roman 
  10. Catholic Church. In other countries many were
  11. closed in the 18th and 19th centuries as a
  12. result of political revolutions. The first 
  13. abbeys, as established in Syria or Egypt, 
  14. were small collections of huts, but later 
  15. massive and extensive building complexes were
  16. constructed throughout Europe.
